They say that the Black Lady is the spirit of Barbara Radzivill - the wife of the Polish king Zhygimont August. In the 1540’s, young prince Zhygimont August secretly married Barbara Radzivill. However, both the royal family and the nobility disapprove of the marriage. The young King’s mother Bona Sforza became the deadly enemy of the princess. In 1551 Barbara Radziwill died when she was 30. She was believed to get poisoned by Bona Sforza.
The King was desperate longing to see his beloved again. According to the legend he attempted to call the spirit of his wife with the help of a sorcerer. The very moment Zhygimont August saw the ghost of Barbara, he headed for it with a cry of happiness. But the ghost disappeared. Since then, the spirit of Barbara, the Black Lady, has been haunting Niasvizh castle.
